Prisoners of Ritual: An Odyssey Into Female Genital Circumcision in Africa (Haworth Women's Studies) 1st Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

This unique volume focuses on the psychosexual and social effects of female genital mutilation, an ancient, deeply entrenched custom saturating the larger part of Africa. Over a period of six years, Author Hanny Lightfoot-Klein trekked through outlying areas of Sudan, Kenya, and Egypt, where she lived with a number of African families. What she learned by way of in-depth personal interviews and firsthand observation has enabled her to add a previously unknown and often astonishing dimension to our knowledge of ritual practices and human sexuality. This valuable book will be extremely helpful to professionals and scholars in women's studies, social psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatry, gynecology, sexology, as well as cross-cultural and African studies. It should also interest anyone who is concerned with male circumcision in the United States.

I can honestly say that I never knew about this kind of thing until I stumbled upon this book in my search for ritualistic scarification.
I bought it because I wanted to know more about other cultures and their practices.
I was both horrified and in a small way, empowered knowing that these women undergo this treatment as a part of life, as if it were totally normal and natural. For them it may be, but I could not imagine knowing this would happen to me if I were born there.
Not judging, just an observation and the feelings it evoked.

I read this book in 1990, probably before a lot of the #meToo'ers were born. All women (and men and others) should read this book to learn about the real dangers of social customs and sex crimes and so forth. Obviously all rapists whose crime results in the victim needing medical treatment belong in prison if not before a firing squad. But people huffing and puffing about things like New York's Governor having male hormones when they did not protect their virtue behind nunnery walls should learn about the realities of human existence on this earth. This book tells it like it is.
